For many, fall is the time for hanging out at our local cafes and stopping by our favorite bakeries for some warm pastries. One local bakery, however, has been bringing something new to Pittsburgh’s fall atmosphere… México.
With Dia de Muertos being days away on November 2, now Is the perfect time to introduce yourself to Panadería Jazmín, a Mexican bakery offering some of the country’s best treats. Located in Mt. Lebanon, this bakery is a short drive to authentic Mexican pastries.
Conchas, a “Brioche-like bread topped with vanilla flavored sugar paste in the shape of a seashell,” is a classic go-to. Pan de Muerto, literally translated as, “Bread of the Dead,” is a perfect snack for Day of the Dead, Halloween, or simply whenever you feel like it. Whether you feel like having a well-known staple of every bakery like biscuits, muffins, and cookies with a variety of fillings, or looking for something from Mexico like bigotes, barquillos, or an empanada with apple filling and cinnamon, this panadería has it all.
The idea came to life when José and Jazmín moved to the U.S and cherished the memories of their family bakery back in México from when they were kids. Jazmín reminisces, saying, “México, all the mornings, we eat our bread with coffee or something. So, it’s for every single day in Mexico, we eat a lot of bread.” It didn’t take long for them to want to learn how to not only run a business reflecting their past, but also build one from the ground up. With guidance from the University of Pittsburgh Small Business Development Center, they were able to create a business plan and open in 2020.
All it takes is a quick stop at this take-out bakery in Mt. Lebanon to try some authentic, artisanal pastries. You can also pre-order and pick up at their location, so you can top off the perfect fall day with amazing desserts.
