CNN reported, President Barack Obama spoke about the recent, horrible shooting in Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon where at least 10 people were murdered at a conference on Thursday October 1.

“Somehow this has become routine. The reporting is routine. My response here at this podium ends up being routine, the conversation in the aftermath of it … We have become numb to this,” he said to the crowd of reporters as he looked back on the many times he’s given similar speeches. Obama then continued with, “What is also routine is that somebody, somewhere will comment and say ‘Obama politicized this issue.’ Well this is something we should politicize. It is relevant to our common life together, to the body politic.”

According to CNN, The President then went on to compare America to other major countries around the world. “We are not the only country on Earth that has people with mental illnesses or that want to do harm to other people. We are the only advanced country on Earth that sees these kinds of mass shootings every few months.”

“This is a political choice that we make, to allow this to happen every few months in America. We collectively are answerable to those families who lose their loved ones,” the President went on in frustration. “Each time this happens, I am going to say we are going to have to do something about it. And we are going to have to change our laws.”

President Obama then admitted to the press that it was the people who could make a change, not him alone, CNN said.  “This is not something I can do myself. I would ask the American people to think about how they can get our government to change these laws and to save lives, and to let young people grow up. That will require a change of politics on this issue.”Obama also stated, “If you think this is a problem then you should expect your elected officials to reflect your views. Each time this happens I am going to bring this up.”

The Huffington Post reported, the names of the victims have now been released. These names are: Lucero Alcaraz,Quinn Glen Cooper, Kim Saltmarsh Dietz, Lucas Eibel, Jason Dale Johnson, Lawrence Levine,  Sarena Dawn Moore,  Treven Taylor Anspach, Rebecka Ann Carnes. Two of them, Ana Boylan and Chris Mintz are injured and recovering. Now that there are names to the poor victims of this crime, resident Obama’s call for action holds more significance then ever.

According to CNN, the President ended his speech with his deepest condolences, “May God bless the memories of those who were killed today …. may He give us the strength to come together and find the courage to change.”
