Over the years at Seneca Valley High School, you see less and less Halloween spirit from the students.
At the beginning of October, a survey was conducted to find out if students were starting to lose the Halloween spirit. Every student interviewed believes that no one dresses up anymore or that it is exceedingly rare. However, the survey finds that is not the case.
Out of a small group of 80 students surveyed, 59 dressed up for Halloween last year. If that is the case, why not take advantage of that and wear it to school? To determine the answer, a select number of students were asked if they would wear their costumes to school. Freshman, Aletti Rivera, said, “I’m dressing as the joker, but I wouldn’t wear my costume to school. Nowadays, kids are so mean, and they say whatever they want without care.” Nine out of 10 students agreed with Rivera and said the same thing. Could that really be the reason?
Students do not want harsh words from each other, but it could be overthought a little. Senior, Natalie Wilson, explained, “I wouldn’t be embarrassed because it’s Halloween. Others may think they are too old, but they can’t ruin my fun.” It seems that it is not about whether their costumes are ridiculous and silly, or even scary. Students seem more concerned with the thoughts of other students than just being able to dress up and express Halloween spirit.
Forty out of the 59 students who dressed up also went trick or treating last year. With the possible chance of seeing others, dressing silly in front of strangers, and even getting laughed at about the costume choice. What makes school so different? Could it be a bunch of different voices in one place, or could it be that others judge first so they do not get judged?
Halloween should be fun. You can be something or someone else for a day, and it is not about other opinions. let loose, have fun, and have a Happy Halloween!
