The Difference of School Schedules
November 7, 2016
If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to go to a different school that has a different schedule style, read further into one school in Ohio that does things just a little differently.
Not every school in the world has the same schedule, but even in the United States many schools have adapted their own method to the school day. Some schools start at 8:15 in the morning, some end at 1:30 in the afternoon. Some schools even run on a two-hour delay schedule every Wednesday just to give the students a little break.
A new student at the Seneca Valley Senior High School this year transferred from Ohio. You wouldn’t think that the school system would be much different but in reality, the differences were more than I had expected.
To begin, this school started at 8:00 in the morning and ended at 3:00 in the afternoon. Although on Wednesdays, school started at 9:35 in the morning because of an alternating block schedule.
A block schedule is similar to the structure of college where they have a smaller amount of classes for a longer period of time, with breaks in between each class, in which you could spend that time to relax or finish some last minute homework.
At this Ohio school, the Wednesday block schedule consisted of three, one-and-a-half-hour class segments. In between these class segments was a five-minute break. On Thursdays, there would be a block schedule that consisted of four, one-and-a-half hour segments with five-minutes in between them.
Another major difference between Seneca Valley School District and this school in Ohio is what your lunch and study hall options are.
As it is well known, no students are allowed to ever leave campus unless a doctor’s note is issued, but in Ohio you can leave for lunches and even study halls. As juniors and seniors, you become eligible for a system called Flex Passes.
Flex Passes are essentially a “get out of jail free card” which allows you to leave school for an hour-and-a-half instead of sitting in the cafeteria for that time.
Although staying in the cafeteria for their study hall has its perks as well. You have freedom to do whatever you want during that period of time, like going outside and even ordering pizza and sharing it with your friends.
Not every school is the same in the way they run things. If you had the chance, would you change anything about the way Seneca Valley School District runs their schedule?
