The students of Seneca Valley have had many questions about this year’s homecoming theme, known as “Lavender Haze.”
Students have been left trying to figure out what to do for their outfits and styles. The origin of the 2023 Homecoming theme is as follows: Put to a poll by the student council, the theme was based on Taylor Swift’s song “Lavender Haze.”
This year’s homecoming theme is unlike the themes of the recent dances, given that it takes the form of a song instead of a general theme or time period, like Old Hollywood or Fairy Garden.
According to Gavin Cress, who is a member of the student council, planning for this homecoming started back in July of last year, along with the planning of the homecoming parade and football game. The theme, however, was not decided by the student council. As stated by Gavin, “We didn’t actually decide the theme for homecoming ourselves. We put a poll on the Student Council Instagram page and let other students vote.” Some of the other themes that were included in the poll were Disco, Happily Ever After, Gold Rush, and Into the Rabbit Hole (Alice in Wonderland), according to Mrs. Mutschler, the Student Council advisor.
After interviewing multiple students, most of them said they didn’t know a thing about the theme, and those who did know about it did not like it at all. Even some of the Taylor Swift fans were disappointed since the only thing that went along with theme was wearing something purple. Some people did enjoy the idea of the theme, but they still did not know what to do about their outfits. Students anticipate Homecoming regardless of the theme, but an overview of what the theme entails could have been helpful to students unsure of how to go along with it.
