With the first movie of the new trilogy now closed and the title of the upcoming film released, fans like myself have begun theorizing as to what direction the world will go with the new movies as they introduce new themes and continue the old ones. More specifically, ones that talk about the nature of good and evil and the long battle between the Jedi and Sith Order.

The one theme in particular that will affect the nature of what it means to be a Jedi or Sith is the theme of generations. Star Wars is very clearly about family and legacy, as we see with Darth Vader and Luke with the sins of the father unto the son, and it appears that keeping with this theme will make a significant shift in the series.

Previously, Jedi were about being as emotionless as possible while the Sith were very focused on wrath to fuel their dark power. However, it was Luke’s emotions that led to him defeating the empire and bringing temporary peace to the galaxy.  Because of this, I believe the Jedi way will change from its traditional values and into a new set of rules.

Before Jedi were not allow to really feel emotion, but I believe that Luke will teach Rey to use her positive emotions, such as hope and compassion, for good. This will then lead to a new order of Jedi who are encouraged to feel as opposed to cast emotions out.

Similarly, I believe the Sith will move in the opposite direction of the Jedi and go from very emotional to emotionless. Kylo Ren’s conflicting emotions were a big issue in The Force Awakens as they prevented him from ever truly turning towards the Dark Side. Due to this, we see Snoke tell him that they need to finish his training and control his emotions better.

This change to the Star Wars Universe reflects that of the current world where people correlate emotion with good things such as compassion but think of cold people as evil, not relateable, and sometimes even less the truly human. Humanity is centered around feeling more often then not and because of that new thinking in this new generation of viewers, which once again generations is a prominent theme in Star Wars, it has led to this change in what it means to be good or evil and therefore what it means to be a Jedi or a Sith.
